Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) today announces the opening date of the snow crab fishery in Crab Fishing Areas 12 (12, 18, 25 and 26) and 12E. As per the Terms of Reference of the Committee for setting the opening date for the fishery, the main considerations to trigger the targeted fishery opening date are:
Québec and Moncton – April 9, 2023
Fisheries and Oceans Canada announces the opening date of the snow crab fishery in Snow Crab Fishing Area 12F.
The fishery will open at 6:00 Atlantic Daylight Time (ADT) on April 11, 2023.
The fishery will close on June 30, 2023 at 23:59 hrs (ADT). All gear must be removed from the water by the end of the day June 30th, but landing of traps and crabs can occur on July 1st.
Gaspé – April 6, 2023
Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Quebec Region announces the reopening of the competitive 4RST Atlantic Halibut fishery for the licence holders of the Gaspé fixed gear fleet of less than 13.71 m from the Lobster fishers group.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) releases the details of the 2023 snow crab fishery Conservation Harvesting Plan for the Crab Fishing Area (CFA) 12E.
The total allowable catch (TAC) in CFA 12E is 291.39 t. The TAC is distributed based on historic shares of 75% for New Brunswick (218.54t), 12.5% for Quebec and 12.5% for Prince Edward Island (36.42 t each).
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) releases the details of the 2023 snow crab fishery Conservation Harvesting Plan for the Crab Fishing Area (CFA) 12 (12, 18, 25, 26).
The total allowable catch (TAC) in CFA 12 is 31,466.78 t. Details of the sharing of the TAC can be found in the CFA 12 snow crab administrative list.
April 4, 2023 – This Notice To Fish Harvesters provides the details of the 2023 fisheries management measures to protect North Atlantic right whales (NARW), as announced by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) on March 31st, 2023.
The management measures will take effect in the Gulf of St. Lawrence as soon as the snow crab fishery opens in Area 12. In other areas where fall/winter fisheries are in progress, measures apply if NARW are detected and non-tended fixed gear fisheries, trap and pot fisheries (such as lobster, crab and other species) are operating.
