REMINDER - GEAR MARKING REQUIREMENTS FOR GROUNDFISH FISHERIES USING UNATTENDED FIXED GEARS  

Sept-Îles – June 5, 2020 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region reminds of the gear marking requirements for fixed gear fisheries targeting groundfish. The fixed gear marking requirements, announced by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in December 2019, have been updated and detailed in a Notice to Fish Harvesters issued on January 31, 2020. 

As of 2020, all fixed gear licence holders using fixed gear must mark the rope used to attach fishing gear to a main buoy with colours specific to the region, the target species and the fishing area in which they are authorized to fish. The following colour markings are required for groundfish fleets using gillnets or longlines: 

  • Gillnet: green and brown
  • Longline: green and pink

The minimum requirements for the number and position of colour markings will also be detailed in the Conditions of Licence.
