This Summer’s Guided Tours of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute Are Going Virtual!

By
Jean-Yves Savaria

After being paused last summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, guided tours of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute (MLI) are back this year in a brand new format. Adapted into a virtual experience, these exclusive tours of the Institute will give you a taste of the diverse work done there and take you behind the scenes to see some scientific research and unique areas like the tank room, certain laboratories and the Canadian Coast Guard vessel maintenance shop. You might even run into some employees who will tell you all about their passion!

Our dynamic guide will accompany you on your tour of the Institute, making it just as interactive as it would be in person. Whether or not you are in the Lower St. Lawrence, you will be able to take a tour and ask questions, no matter where you are!

The Maurice Lamontagne Institute, a world of discovery!

Did you know that the Maurice Lamontagne Institute is Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s only French-speaking research centre in marine ecosystem science and one of the main centres of this kind in the world?

It is also the largest research centre focused on the St. Lawrence and its marine ecosystems, with some 450 employees working to learn more about the species that live there, their environment and the stresses they are facing, in an effort to better protect them.

With more than 70 laboratories, the Institute conducts research on a number of marine species and aquatic ecosystems. Our teams of scientists provide essential data in many fields: oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, hydrography and navigation, as well as the management and protection of living resources, habitats and aquatic ecosystems, including marine mammals and species at risk.

The MLI’s teams assess the abundance of over 40 fish and invertebrate stocks to provide advice on conserving and sustainably managing these important resources. They also monitor oceanographic conditions to help document the impact of climate change and provide input for ocean models.
