Opening of whelk fishing in zones 1 to 9 and 11 to 14 and changes to management measures
Québec – April 4, 2025
Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region announces the opening of whelk fishing in Areas 1 to 9 and 11 to 14. The fishery will be open from April 8 to May 15 and from July 15 to November 30, 2025.
In addition, changes to the management measures will be in effect as of the 2025 season. Other management measures are included in the 2025-2027 Conservation Harvesting Plan approved on April 4, 2025.
Minimal whelk size
The minimum whelk size for zones 4 and 5 is now established at 90 mm.
Total allowable catch
A total allowable catch (TAC) has been established in fishing areas 3 to 9 and 14, and the TAC for areas 1, 2 and 11 to 13 have been revised downwards. The TAC for the 2025 season are as follows:
Area 1 : 166.5 tons
Area 2 : 40 tons
Area 3 : 1.5 tons
Area 4 : 7 tons
Area 5 :15,5 tons
Area 6 : 87,5 tons
Area 7 : 1 ton
Area 8 : 39.5 tons
Area 9 : 1 ton
Area 11 : 1 ton
Area 12 : 5.5 tons
Area 13 : 22.5 tons
Area 14 : 1 ton
Fishing seasons
Starting in 2026, the fishing season will be set annually from April 1 to May 15 and from July 15 to November 30.
