Symposium for sustainable fishing in the St. Lawrence: An event not to be missed!

As part of the 144th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society (AFS), the Research and Innovation for Sustainable Fishing in the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf symposium will be held on August 18 and 19, 2014, at the Québec City Convention Centre. The symposium is an initiative of stakeholders from the Quebec fisheries sector. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided for an international audience.

The symposium will bring together industry, Aboriginal community representatives, fishery managers and scientists. Thirty speakers will be covering topics such as the status of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, environmental and ecosystemic challenges, sustainable use and resource conservation. The speakers will present various case studies to illustrate Quebec success stories, particularly in the areas of resource management, new fisheries and market adaptation.

The event aims to provide an overview of the current situation and to present some of the solutions that were recently considered to manage, develop and protect the St. Lawrence in harmony with fisheries. Managing this unique ecosystem presents challenges that will undoubtedly be of interest to fishery managers and scientists from other countries. The symposium is therefore an opportunity to learn about Quebec-based fishery-related achievements.

For the first time in over 10 years, Québec City will be hosting the American Fisheries Society's annual meeting, an international scientific conference, from August 17 to 21, 2014.
