The sensitive balance of marine ecosystems is at risk. A number of aquatic invasive species are already present in our waters and others threaten to join them, with the potential of transforming the underwater landscape.
These invaders pose threats to ecology and the economy. While regulators, scientists, and members of the aquaculture and fishing industries are particularly concerned, the problem affects everyone using our waters.
Since human activities are the principal cause of the spread of invasive species, the solutions are in our hands! Everybody’s cooperation is essential.
The Aquatic Invasive Species Identification Booklet contains information on major species that have invaded marine environments in eastern Canada, how to identify them and what you can do to prevent their spread and establishment.
Take note of the location (the GPS co-ordinates would be nice) and the date you spotted the invasive species, and then contact the nearest Fisheries and Oceans Canada office.
