Yves de Lafontaine, New Director of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is announcing the appointment of Yves de Lafontaine to the position of Regional Director of Science and Director of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute. He is replacing Ariane Plourde, who left in December 2013 to pursue her career at the head of the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski.

Presentation of National Recreational Fisheries Awards

Through its National Recreational Fisheries Awards, Fisheries and Oceans Canada honours Jean Robitaille and Pierre Manseau for their exceptional contribution to conserving wildlife species and enhancing recreational fishing.

Jean Robitaille in known for his efforts in striped bass reintroduction, in the St. Lawrence River. Pierre Manseau contributed to the Atlantic salmon protection for more than 30 years.

Colder Water in 2013–2014 

Winter 2013–2014  was particularly cold in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. From December to March, the average air temperature was the lowest it has been since 1993. An abnormally heavy sea ice cover formed. The annual survey of oceanographic conditions in the Gulf was conducted during the coldest month of March since 1948.
