Atlantic halibut fishing season-opening announcement – Spring fishery -Area 4RST

Magdalen Islands – March 29, 2023

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region announces the opening of the Atlantic halibut fishing season, in areas 4RST, for the Magdalen Islands fleet from April 1st, 2023 to April 28, 2023.

The fishing season is divided into 4 periods. A fishing period corresponds to one week. Subject to valid Conditions of Licence and subject to a Variation Order, licence holders are authorized to participate in one of the following 4 fishing periods

  • Period 1: From April 1st to April 7
  • Period 2: From April 8 to April 14
  • Period 3: From April 15 to April 21
  • Period 4: From April 22 to April 28 

In order to obtain the Conditions of Licence, licence holders must access the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) and submit an application 48 hours to 72 hours prior to the selected fishing period. Valid Conditions of Licence will be available for printing on the NOLS no later than the day before the requested fishing season. Temporary closure area for the directed Atlantic halibut fishery

Licence holders are advised that a temporary closure area for the directed Atlantic halibut fishery in part of Division 4T is in effect due to significant cod bycatch.

This temporary closure is within the straight lines bounded by the following points:

  1. 48°38’34.67" N         63°50’00.00" O
  2. 48º34’52.09" N         63º40’00.00" O
  3. 48º25’00.00" N         63º40’00.00" O
  4. 48º25’00.00" N         63°50’00.00" O
  5. 48°38’34.67" N         63°50’00.00" O
