Fisheries and Oceans Canada is planning to establish a Marine Protected
Area (MPA) in the St. Lawrence Estuary. In the context of this
project, the Department has consulted through sector tables
various stakeholder and user groups concerning the proposed
management measures for long-term protection and conservation of marine mammals travelling through the St. Lawrence Estuary and those who live there
year-round, as well as their habitats and food resources. Meetings
have been held in Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Forestville, La Malbaie and Québec City, and discussions
have focused on
shipping, harvesting of living resources, economic development and
development of tourism, recreational activities, environment, and
education and research. The consultation sessions were held between
October 20, 2004 and December 31,
2004. Members of the public were welcome to attend and ask questions
at the end of the sessions.
The members of public were also invited to comment using the consultation workbook and the backgrounder on the project.
