The annual load and the composition of material exported to the coast of Hudson Bay were characterized and modelled over the hydrological cycle of the Great Whale River. Annual exportations of particulate inorganic matter (PIM), particulate organic matter (POM), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to Hudson Bay were estimated at 135 000, 21 000, and 90 000 t, respectively. PIM, POM, and DOC concentrations were positively related to discharge, as were concentrations of coarse (>1 mm), fine (53 µ-1mm), and very fine (0.7-53 µ) particulate organic matter. Of the three size fractions, very fine particulate organic matter exhibited the highest heterotrophic activity, the lowest C :N ration, and the highest chlorophyll a concentration (1 µg•L-1 during summer. During the ice break up period, 25-35 % of the yearly PIM load, 23% of the POM load, 11 % of the DOC load, and 5-14 % of the dissolved nutrient load were exported to Hudson Bay. River waters were less concentrated in nutrients than Hudson Bay coastal waters. Comparison of DOC output with that of 46 other rivers draining the Precambrian Shield shows that, for a given runoff value, rivers flowing through tundra to Hudson and Ungava bays carried a specific DOC load aout half that of rivers flowing through forested basins to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Atlantic salmon have been occasionally reported along eastern Hudson Bay, north of Richmond Gulf; however, in the Nastapoka River estuary they dominated gill-net catches over a 3-year period. The results of surveys of native fishermen suggest that this is the only anadromous stock in eastern Hudson Bay. Salmon are also present in the Nastapoka River above a 35-m coastal escarpment. It is proposed that they colonized the river from Ungava Bay by headwater exchange with the Koksoak River following deglaciation. Atlantic salmon and brook trout accounted for >80 % of gill-net catches in the lower Nastapoka River and estuary. Salmon and trout were similar in size up to age 7. Trout growth was linear whereas salmon growth slowed, resulting in a smaller maximum size, but longevity was greater in salmon than in trout. Salmon matured at a greater age and had lower fecundity and reproductive potential than trout. In the estuary, both species consumed mainly littoral marine amphipods and marine fishes. The salmon population is located at the northern limit of the thermal optimum reported for the species. Habitat in the lower Nastapoka River may favour salmon over trout because of the rapid current in the restricted freshwater zone below the coastal waterfall.
